ABOUT THE BOOK TOWER

A BOOKCASE DOWN BELOW

This is, admittedly, not quite the Book Tower, yet it was this building and especially the collections it contains that was Anouk De Clercq's main source of inspiration when she was asked by the City of Ghent to produce a student monument. In the emptiness of St. Pietersplein's underground parking near St.Peter's Abbey church, she created a storeys high work on the huge wall near the stairway: a gigantic abstract bookcase (Henry van de Velde saw his tower as a huge upward bookcase), the rhythm of which is sustained by an interactive soundscape she and Anton Aeki composed.

The link with the Book Tower is knowledge, an aspect of student life she wanted to emphasize, as well as the historic significance of the environment.
