On September 16th, 2005, the Ghent University's Board of Administrators decided to invest 30 million Euros in the restoration of Henry Van de Velde's Book Tower, thus assuming its responsibilities for Ghent's fourth tower, the "tower of wisdom and knowledge".
However, at a rate of 1 Euro per cm², individuals are given the opportunity to become sponsors. Each contribution will receive a mention on the website. The surface of the building measures about 23 million cm². Plenty of time to subscribe!
Another sponsoring formula is patronage: for 250 Euros, you can sponsor a step of the Book Tower's staircase. There are 352 steps...
The campaign was started on Monday, September 26th, 2005 on the steps of the Book Tower by former minister Freya Van den Bossche, former Mayor of Ghent Frank Beke, reigning Mayor Daniel Termont and Alderman Karin Temmerman, each of whom handed over 250 Euros to the rector and thus became godfathers/mothers of the Tower's upper steps.
Whoever is interested can make a payment to become godparent of a step of the tower (250 Euros) or 'owner' of X numbers of cm². The account number is: Universiteit Gent - 390-0965800-26. Do not forget to mention: "trede Boekentoren" or "X cm² Boekentoren".
